about

On Brave New World, Tredici Bacci is wilder, sillier, and more absurd than ever before. Founded in 2013 by composer Simon Hanes, Tredici Bacci began as an outlet for his compositional voice, focused on performing large ensemble Italian soundtrack-inspired music in venues and bars across the globe. Previous albums Amore Per Tutti and La Fine del Futuro established the group’s cinematic style, blossoming through sweet melodies and soaring instrumentation. But with Brave New World, Hanes crafts surreal palettes, taking the ensemble into a new, grittier direction. It’s their most vulnerable music yet, set ablaze by zig-zagging patterns and raucous melodies.

Hanes composed the music of Brave New World at a moment of transition in his personal life. At the time, Tredici Bacci had been making music together for nearly 10 years, and had carved a very specific niche. Hanes knew that the Italian soundtrack music of their beginnings wasn’t the only kind of music he wanted to compose, nor was it the only kind of music the ensemble could play. So, he began work on Brave New World as a way to break the mold, letting his emotions run rampant as he went. His work probes a range of feelings—anger, silliness, joy, absurdity—and draws on Hanes’ love of music outside the Italian soundtrack catalog, like the frenetic prog rock of British artists like Cardiacs, and the undefinable ingenuity of composers like Frank Zappa. It’s a bold step away from Tredici Bacci’s past, but it still showcases their cohesive sound, foregrounding the ensemble’s deft skill and willingness to get chaotic and have fun.

To pair with the ensemble’s bold, new sound, Hanes wrote for an even larger group, adding orchestral colors such as contrabass clarinet, theremin, french horn, full choir, and celeste. With this 25-person instrumentation, each track takes on a different style or emotion, twisting and turning between moods. “Future is forever” rings like an ironic anthem; “Galaxia” channels the mystery and mysticism of outer space; “Hitchcock’s Boogie” is a surreal country romp; “Smash Ennio” is a prismatic representation of the ensemble breaking out of their mold. These pieces aren’t just reactions to moments or fleeting feelings—rather, each song creates a frenzy of ever-evolving moods that reflect the deep emotions Hanes has felt over the past couple of years as he and Tredici Bacci travel along a new path.

And while Tredici Bacci is embarking on a new sonic journey with Brave New World, their sense of community is unwavering. When Hanes put this music in front of the musicians, he wasn’t sure what would happen—but they played it just as always, bringing their unique mix of lightness, humor, and darkness to the intimate pieces. It’s a community that’s developed through 10 years of playing everywhere together—clubs, venues, bars, you name it—and that togetherness gives Brave New World its deeply personal flair. This album shows vulnerability on the part of the composer, but it also gives us insight into the vulnerability of the ensemble. Together, they go deeper than ever before, breaking open and smashing their past to sculpt a new future.
